Hosting Teen Parties

Maintaining your duty of care

Security

  • Adults should be present at all times and be vigilant - noticeable but discreet.
  • If the party is to be large, enlist help of other parents to help with security, the bar and food preparation.
  • Consider employing professional security guards, especially for larger parties.
  • When a guest phones to RSVP, - consider checking whether a taxi needs to be pre-booked or if a responsible adult will be collecting him or her and request a contact phone number of parents while the student is at the party (eg mobile, restaurant, friend's).
  • Compile a checklist of names of guests expected to attend - insist that each name be checked against the guest list before an individual is allowed to enter the party.
  • Parents/security guard should be at the entrance to check invitations before allowing entry.
  • Regardless of invitation, be firm when preventing access to the party to guests who are already seriously inebriated or who are behaving badly.
  • It is recommended that all bags and coats are held in a secure room (under adult supervision) to avoid theft and unwanted items being bought into the party.
  • It is advisable not to allow guests who have left your party to return.
  • Restrict access to areas of the venue (particularly in a private home) where small groups can congregate.
  • Consider the removal of all valuable items from the area where the party is to be held, to avoid problems of breakage and theft.
  • If you hare having a large party it is advisable to notify the local police and advise them of the finishing time.

Food

  • Consult your teenager about the type of food preferred.
  • Have plenty of food available.
  • If not enough food is being consumed relative to alcohol consumption consider slowing the supply of alcohol.

Alcohol

  • Consider age of guests, size of group and knowledge of your teenager's friends when deciding whether or not to allow alcohol. Remember your legal responsibilities.
  • If alcohol is allowed it is preferable for the host to supply it to maintain some control on the type and quantity.
  • If BYO, place a strict limit on quantity and type brought by each guest, and be aware that this is extremely difficult to control.
  • Whether alcohol is BYO or supplied, have a responsible adult act as barman in order to control the distribution.
  • Be vigilant in monitoring consumption to avoid any problems caused by drunkeness.
  • Supply plenty of soft drinks.
  • Avoid glass containers.
