Whilst on Parental Leave:
By this stage you may have decided
whether you will be considering combining breastfeeding
and work. It is time to sit and think of a strategy or
alternative work routine to be discussed with your Manager
to help you achieve these objectives.
- How long does it take you to breastfeed
and how often do you need to breastfeed to achieve
your goals and how will this impact on your working
day?
- How will your position responsibilities
be covered while you are away from your desk breastfeeding,
e.g. urgent requests, telephone calls, etc.
- How will this impact on your team?
- How will this impact on your customers?
- Think about how you will organise
meetings and work commitments around your breastfeeding
or expressing.
- How will you utilise flexible
work practices available to you.
- Before returning to work, your
baby needs to be able to drink breast milk from a
bottle or cup.
- Talk to your childcare service
or carer about your intentions to combine work and
breastfeeding.
- To breastfeed your baby throughout
the day, source childcare close to work.
- How will you store your expressed milk?
When you return to work:
- Discuss your feeding or expressing
needs with selected team members/colleagues.
- Plan and develop an illness
action plan.
- Provide your service with instructions
on your preferred method of handling your breast
milk.
- Try to relax - source techniques
that work for you, to assist you to achieve the "let down" process.
At work, consider:
- Keeping extra breast pads handy.
- Keeping a spare shirt in the office.
